The Saga of the Old Gods

In the preceding decades

When we were young gods

With fire in our bellies

Spitting lightning

Every step we took was an earthquake

Every footfall a thunderclap

We were

Metaphysical forces beyond nature

Primal

With

Strength unbridled

The life coursed through my veins

I knew it all

I had it all

There was nothing I couldn’t do

No step too far for me to take

Nothing was beyond my reach

I slayed monsters

I saved innocents

I liberated countries

And I fought tyranny

I loved violence

Oh how it made my blood boil

I gave in to lust

It intoxicated my soul

It did not matter who I fought really

As long as I won

What I could not break through

I seduced

Chicanery and debauchery were my middle names

I like the others

In for a good time

Always

Eternity could wait

Or so it seemed

Now our time is almost gone

The sands no longer shift for us

We were young gods once

With fire in our bellies

Spitting lightning

Every step we took was an earthquake

Every footfall a thunderclap

We were

Metaphysical forces beyond nature

Primal

With

Strength unbridled

Now there are broken hills where once mountains stood

Drying puddles where oceans once floated

Ruins where great civilisations prospered

Of strength

There is none

Only wisdom bourne of countless failures and small triumphs

Where laughter chimed

Only the brittle sighs of sadness remain

No longer the news

Just hidebound history

There are new gods now

With fire in their bellies

Spitting lightning

Every step they take an earthquake

Their every footfall a thunderclap

They are

Metaphysical forces beyond nature

Primal

With

Strength unbridled

But

They are near sighted and overconfident

Just like we were before them

They will learn

Or not

For the world they came into

That we left for them

Is not what we met

We go into the silent night

Pondering

Witnessing

Judging

Ultimately in futility
